Carol Griffin Enamels

Glass on Metal – Vitreous Enamel powders fused on to Metal at high temperatures

Carol is a designer maker of contemporary enamel art works, creating decorative wall panels, high fired bowls and distinctive jewellery.

Carol has lived, studied and worked in the Black Country/Midlands all her life. Having completed a foundation art course in Stourbridge she went on to gain a BA (Hons) Degree in 3D Design (specialising in Jewellery & Silversmithing) at Birmingham, followed by a PGCE.

For most of Carol’s working life, she has taught Craft Design Technology & Art in Wolverhampton Schools. This finally came to an end in 2010, when she started her enamel business, from a Studio at home.

She is excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Ruskin Glass Centre on a permanent basis and has now moved into Unit 4.

Carol creates textured landscapes and seascapes, often forming the metal first. Spun copper bowls are coated in thin layers of enamel then fired high at high temperatures to create wonderful colours and effects exploiting the reaction with the copper oxides. Jewellery pieces are often mini enamel panels, formed, textured & sometimes backed with embossed pewter. Commissions include Tree Tags, House Portraits, bespoke enamelled Greeting cards & a series of Panels based on the Seasons.

All work is unique and hand crafted using a range of enamel techniques, including  graffito, high firing, embedding, riso screens, masks & stencils, and a variety of enamels. Working with various techniques and materials, work is mainly process driven, with an emphasis on texture, form & colour enhanced by reactions with the copper oxides.

Carol has exhibited in London, Oxford, York, Spain & Netherlands, and is a member of the British Society of Enamellers (BSOE), and the Guild of Enamellers where she has been Chairman and Bursary Secretary.

Carol also runs enamel workshops and courses around the UK, from one to ten students. All equipment, tools and materials provided. Please contact her for more details.
