Mask Making Workshop

from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm

Three days of mask making with Mike Chase

For teachers, theatre designers, model makers, mask makers, puppeteers and anyone who wishes to get their hands dirty.

This mask making course focuses on designing a mask for use in performance on the theme of archetypes. There are many groups of archetypes which influence the design of any individual mask: fairy stories and folk tales, temperaments etc. can all be present in a mask.

The Process: Designing a mask in clay over a plaster base; mask making onto the clay design with paper and cloth. A variety of materials will be used to create an effective mask, which will be painted, varnished and fitted for use. This is a hands on workshop – please bring an apron. Michael trained in mask in England, Bali and Italy between 1981 and 1996. He taught and directed physical theatre, mime and mask at Arts Educational Drama Department for ten years. He established The Mask Studio in the mid 90’s and developed masks for training, education, performance and therapy. Michael’s masks are used in colleges, universities and schools, and by theatre companies, and theaters internationally.
